One of the most commercially and critically successful actors of the early 21st century, Johnny Depp has been a part of many successful films since his entry into the business in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Cry-Baby and Edward Scissorhands were a couple breakout films for Depp in 1990. In 1993, he made Benny & Joon and What's Eating Gilbert Grape. After a number of successful suspense thriller films to close out the 20th century, Depp showed his softer side with romantic comedies in 2000, including Chocolat. In 2003, Depp launched to mega-stardom with his portray of Jack Sparrow in the first of four Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The first three films achieved tremendous worldwide box office performance.
